PHONICS- How to apply at home
Phonics Information:
What is phonics? Phonics involves matching the sounds of spoken English with individual letters or groups of letters. For example, the sound k can be spelled as c, k, ck or ch. Teaching children to blend the sounds of letters together helps them decode unfamiliar or unknown words by sounding them out.
Phonics Screening:
The Year 1 children take part in The phonics screening check in June. This assesses children on how well they can decode certain words. Decoding means sounding out an unfamiliar written word. To do this, children will need to be able to recognise letters and the sounds that they represent. This is an important part of achieving reading fluency!
We have lot’s of resources on Showbie in our ‘Phonics’ folder. The resources can be used at home to support your child’s learning in phonics.
Please use this video and the Year 1 Reading at Home Workshop to support your child in phonics and reading.
